Chapter Twenty-One

On Thursday morning, Moore stood next to Kendall at the edge of White Haven Castle. He frowned at the strange patch of thick clouds and mist that hovered over the headland, unmoved by the strong wind that blew in from the sea. The cliff’s edge had completely disappeared.

“Who called this in?”

Kendall pointed to a man wearing jeans and thick jacket who was organising the fencing for the upcoming Samhain celebrations a short distance away with his colleagues. “Mr Kevin Harrison arrived early this morning, and after an hour of arranging cones and organising the path for the Samhain celebrations, realised the odd cloud wasn’t moving. Remembering all the chatter about mists and the disappearing harbour, he called it in. Very apologetic about it, too.”

“He shouldn’t be. He’s right. It is odd.” Moore studied the clear edges of the mass. “It’s too specific, and you can’t even see into the middle of it.”

Kendall looked nervous, shuffling backwards and forwards on her feet. She hadn’t looked like herself since Monday night. “Are we overreacting?”

“No. We’re being cautious. We need to cordon it off. Not that it should be an issue. No bugger will come up here today. Not with this weather.” He glanced around at the thickening clouds that seemed to press closer and closer to the ground, almost scraping across the top of Ravens’ Wood. It wasn’t raining yet, but it looked imminent. “This is the spot, isn’t it? The place where Zee saw the man?”

Kendall looked distracted, but she seemed to force herself to focus. “Yes. Do you think he’s trying the mist-thing again?”

“Maybe. It’s hard to know what the hell is happening. We need to tell Newton. And I think we should get Ghost OPS back, and maybe one of the witches.” He studied the mist again, noting how it was poised on the cliff, ready to roll into town. “I don’t like it. At all. So far, this lunatic has just been chipping away at us, but maybe he's preparing for a big offensive. And this is the place where Dylan and Cassie were chased yesterday. Into that.” He pointed to the brooding tangle of Ravens’ Wood.

“Chipping away? He’s taken Ben!”

“We don’t know who’s taken Ben, actually. We’re making some massive assumptions.”

Moore narrowed his eyes as he studied the castle and surrounding lands, especially the moors above White Haven. He tried to imagine how it would look in the distant past—primitive, raw, wild. Was this what the man wanted? To return them all to the past? Wipe White Haven and modern Cornwall from the map? That would have far-reaching consequences for much more than just Cornwall.

The man that Kendall had pointed to finished a conversation with his crew, and strode across the grass toward them, a wary eye on the mist beyond them. He looked agitated, and Moore braced himself for more bad news. “Everything all right, Mr Harrison?”

“No. At least, I don’t think so. I presume you know Stan Rogers? The councillor who organises Samhain.”

“The Druid. Well, pretend Druid,” Kendall said, nodding.
